Mortgage rates fell to record lows last week, in part to the Federal Reserve's decision to buy billions in home loans.The FED will be buying $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities every month for the distant future. Freddie Mac's weekly report of mortgage rates showed that a 30-year fixed mortgage went from 3.55 percent to 3.49 percent last week. The 15-year fixed rate mortgage also reached a record low at 2.77 percent (it was 2.85 percent) the week before.
